Interview with Lucie Allen, The Local Dog Groomer
We recently caught up with Lucie Allen to ask her some questions about her grooming business to give more of an insight into what she does and how she can help your dog look and feel fabulous.
Hi Lucie, how long have you been running your grooming business in Broadway?
Hi, I have been at the parlour for about 4 years now, but I’ve been actually grooming for over 7 years.
What inspired you to start the business?
I've always loved dogs and I’ve been brought up with them. I've also always wanted my own business so the two just came hand in hand. It really is hard work from the moment I enter the parlour to the moment I leave, I don't stop. But I love dogs and I really do love going into work meeting new people and their dogs. My parlour is so relaxed the dogs generally love visiting!
How often should dogs be groomed?
Dogs should be groomed every 8-12 weeks, depending on the breed some clients come every 4 weeks. If you want to keep your dog looking good you need to bring them regular to me or keep on top of the grooming at home. I see many dogs that people just get groomed once or twice a year and when they come to me they are very badly matted, which takes me a long time to do and will be uncomfortable for the dog. However I am a groomer and it is my job to make them look nice again.
Are there any breeds you can't groom?
I will give anything a go now I have my large walk in bath, which is very helpful for the bigger dogs and also makes it easier for me to help any elderly dogs.
What if a dog doesn’t enjoy being bathed, are they still able to be groomed?
I generally know how to handle all dogs so they will be able to have a bath. I only have one dog on my books that can't have a bath because he gets very aggressive. I sometimes get aggressive dogs in, but again I can handle them, and in the worse cases if they’re too bad, the owner will need to stay with me. A lot of my clients have been coming to me for years and I now class them as friends, especially as I live in the village it's great because I get to see them out walking to with their dogs.
How long does a full groom take?
Typically a full groom will take 1-2 hours depending on the size of the dog, how regular they come and what service they have.
What other doggy services do you offer?
I also offer hand stripping and dog boarding. I have people’s dogs stay in my house with me when they go away on holiday or out for the day. It really is like home from home for them, they get two walks away and lots of cuddles, kisses and fuss! They become part of my family for the time they are with me. I can only have small breeds and up to two dogs at a time so I can give them my undivided attention. All dogs have a trial before I agree to have them stay just to make sure they are ok with me and my household. Again I have been doing this for a few years so I have some lovely visitors now that I always look forward to having!
